Answer

Use the San Francisco Chronicle Digital Archive (1865-1922) or the New York Times Historical Newspaper (1851-2009).

We also have the San Francisco Chronicle on microfilm for the years of 1904 onward. It is located on the 2nd floor of the library. You can read the articles in the newspapers for those dates (April 30, May 1 ...).Or, use the Index for the San Francisco Call/Chronicle on the top of the microfilm cabinets and look up "Earthquake". (This will give you a list of articles by date, and then you can find the articles on the microfilm.)

If you need help with the microfilm readers, please ask for assistance at the Circulation/Reserve Desk on the 1st floor.
