Answer

Peer-reviewed articles are published in scholarly journals with an editorial board of scholars and specialists in the discipline related to the article topic. The terms "peer-reviewed" and "scholarly" articles are often used interchangeably. This type of article always cites sources in a bibliography or in footnotes. While not all scholarly journals go through the peer review process, it is usually safe to assume that a peer reviewed journal is also scholarly. Remember, just because a journal is peer reviewed does not guarantee that all articles in it are included in the peer review process. Some article types, such as news items, editorials and book and article reviews, will usually not be peer reviewed.

To find peer reviewed articles, use a database from the Articles and Databases by Subject link. If your topic is interdisciplinary, use Discovery or Academic Search. Most library databases have an option to limit results to scholarly/peer-reviewed articles, while some, like JSTOR and Science Direct, contain only scholarly type articles. Find these on the Databases A-Z list below.
